Hello from Hong Kong! As the first
edition of Art Basel in Asia gets underway, we have our pick
of the booths, Who’s
In, Who’s Out, the essentials you shouldn’t leave your hotel without, a
preview of the Encounters projects at the fair and a Don’t Miss list of shows
and events. And if that isn’t enough hot air to keep you buoyant, there is a review
by Robin Peckham of the Inflation show from Mobile M+. Last but not
least, try out Robin's around-town guide to escaping the Art
Crowd.

So, the Art Basel behemoth is almost upon us
in Hong Kong. This year, 245 exhibitors (slightly down on last year’s 264) will
converge on the Exhibition Centre; 50% of them are drawn from the Asia and
Asia-Pacific regions, whilst this year sees a new influx of New York
galleries...

There is a certain kind of freedom in
exhibition practice that comes along with a purity of purpose; the strongest
curatorial work often comes not from those with carte blanche and unlimited
budgets to develop projects wild beyond the imagination, but rather from those
who are acutely aware of and indeed revel in the restrictions of particular
cultural
contexts…

Art fairs are less about art than the art of
the deal. But Art Basel HK is more than just easily consumable blue-chip work.
The Encounters section features not only challenging, but crowd-pleasing
large-scale
works...

Even for the experienced art fair and
biennale-circuit set, Art Basel HK represents a challenge. Hong Kong is a
sartorial nightmare – rain, heat, humidity, air con, long days and longer nights
with barely a chance for a pit stop combine to thwart expected levels of glamour
and sophistication…

Where can you go to avoid the art crowd in
Hong Kong, particularly when neighborhoods like Central and Wanchai can seem
overrun with visiting luminaries during the month of
May?

The inaugural exhibition, “Face to Face,” will include work by Pieter Hugo,

Inflation! Mobile M+’s show
of blow-up sculptures in West Kowloon continues to excite. (Apr 24 – Jun 9; West
Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, Austin Road West, Tsim Sha Tsui).
“A
Journal of the Plague Year” – curated by Cosmin Costinas and Ini Guerrero
and subtitled “Fear, ghosts, rebels. SARS, Leslie and the Hong Kong story”, this
promises an engaging look at recent narratives and history in Hong Kong through
the lens of different artists’ work, amongst them Ai Weiwei, Bernd Behr, Natalia
Sui-hung Chan, Oscar Chan Yik Long, Yin-Ju Chen, George Chinnery and Megan Cope.
(May 17 –20 Jul 20; Para Site: G/F, 4 Po Yan Street, Sheung

Debate: “The Market is the Best Judge of Art’s Quality” –
from Intelligence Squared, a timely argument on the market + / - artistic value.
(May 24, 6.30pm; Art Basel, room N101, HKCEC, Wan Chai).
“I Think it
Rains” – the first collaboration between the Burger Collection and 1a Space,
this project incorporates an exhibition and performance, plus other related
events, and is refreshingly off the beaten track. (May 17 – Jun 30; Cattle Depot
Artist Village, 63 Ma Tau Kok Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon).
Wun Dun Art
Bar – for which local artist Adrian Wong will be creating a
pop-up-bar-cum-art- installation for Absolut Vodka (free drinks for VIPs!). (May
22 -25; the Fringe Club, 2 Lower Albert Street, Central).
Frank
Auerbach and Not Vital – a dual exhibition which should make for a striking
combination (May 22 – Aug 10; Ben Brown Fine Arts, 301 Pedder Building, 12
Pedder Street, Central).
“Fabien M¨¦relle: Elles et Moi” – a
keenly-anticipated first solo show in Hong Kong by the young French artist (May
21 – Jul 6; Edouard Malingue Gallery, 1/F, 8 Queen’s Road,
Central).
“Light Before Dawn: Unofficial Chinese Art 1974 – 1985”
– a rare chance to see work by unofficial artists who helped lay the
foundations for what we now call contemporary Chinese art. Not to be
missed. |
