As soon as one enters the gallery, one is
confronted by a “garden” composed of an undulating artificial wilderness where
footpaths made of white stones wend their way through grassy knolls. Small
clusters of vegetation dot the landscape. The set-up looks random, but is
actually based on the intersection of various protests and parades happening
around the

In 2011, painter Li Zhenwei confounded all
expectations by being awarded Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Art’s top
painting prize. A signature piece by the artist also entered the school’s
permanent collection. As a student Li (b. 1987, Liaoning) developed a laborious
and highly involved painting practise which diverged significantly from his
teachers’ more conventional recommendations — a practice which generally met
with incomprehension from his contemporaries.....

The idea of a Memo creates a fitting sense of
annotation around these pieces; it suggests a note, a record or reminder of
these artists’ work as something not to be forgotten. Though this might seem an
odd imperative for their representing gallery (whose general task it is to make
sure we see and remember them), perhaps this is a good way to treat the work of
young artists whose practice and propositions are very much in
progress...
